Retention of staff: a listening job

February 12, 2020

Training on staff retention is offered in order to better understand what is going on, and above all, to find the necessary means to weld your teams. We attended one of these trainings in order to put into practice the advice given by these professionals. In this era where it is very difficult to recruit and retain resources, our Director of Recruitment and Business Development, Catherine Martin, explains how to mobilize your employees on a daily basis.

Some may feel that they cannot afford to offer wages or working conditions that other companies can afford to offer. Yet statistics say that in 75% of cases, an employee leaves a job because of the immediate manager. This therefore suggests that working conditions are a secondary aspect in an employee’s decision to leave.

Active listening

You will probably be surprised that one of the main topics we discussed in this training was active listening. Yes yes! Active Listening in Staff Retention Training! To show you to what extent we do not take the necessary time to go beyond superfluous conversations, would you be able to answer the following questions: what are the sources of motivation of your employees at work? What are their professional or personal aspirations? Questions that seem very simple, yet most of us are not able to answer them. So how can we expect to be able to really motivate our teams? There are several methods to optimize and promote listening in your teams.

Practice in pairs

In order to make you aware of the extent to which we have shortcomings in our listening, here is a hard-hitting and super effective exercise to do in pairs! In turn, you will have to talk for a minute about what you want. The other person will not have the right to intervene and will have to listen to you carefully for a full minute. You will realize that we are not used to being listened to and listening, without intending to respond. A minute may seem like a short time, but we guarantee that this exercise will surprise you immensely! This listening work helps to unite the members of your team and ensure their cohesion. Take the time to listen to them! This will have a positive effect on your work and that of others!

In the end, never underestimate the relational aspect with your employees. It could save you a lot of time, stress and money in the future!
